Many things in life, that may seem rather opaque when viewed casually, are actually made up of subtle layers of meaning. While building a scale model may seem, on the surface, just a process of simply building something in miniature, it is actually a collection of choices. What do you build? How do you build it? How big do you make it? What do you use for materials? And the ultimate question ... Is this how I really want to spend my time? That is the question I continually ask myself. It is the question underlying my choices. It is the underlying thread that maintains a connection to any creative activity.
At the heart of scratch building is the freedom to create anything you can imagine so I would like to emphasize that nothing I write here should be taken as any sort of dogma of how things have to be done or what the result should be. Any particular model is as unique as you are. Every one of us that engages in a creative activity will have our own approach that is, in the ideal, a reflection of our unique motivations and goals. It is up to you to judge success. I also don’t believe success to be static. Our views of success certainly evolve as we evolve. This is the beauty and freedom of scratch building. The ultimate reward being “time well spent.”
